About ACM
What is ACM?
The Association for Computing Machinery, ACM for short, is the oldest and largest professional organization for computer scientists. It organizes many important conferences (e.g. SigGraph), publishes magazines (Communications etc.), and awards the Turing Awards — the Nobel prizes for Computer Science, so to say.
ACM has almost 100.000 members worldwide and is regionally structured in chapters that operate pretty much autonomously. All have a shared goal and shared values though:
to advance computing as a science and a profession, guided by ACM’s Code of Ethics, Constitution and Bylaws that ensure a qualitative, transparent and democratic organization throughout.
What is ACM Antwerp Student Chapter?
The Antwerp Student Chapter, started in 2010, has as goal to bring students in Computer Science and related disciplines in Antwerp together. We organize activities and guest lectures, go to events, we try to close the gap between study and profession by inviting company speakers. All events that we organize are free for all to attend and open to the general public.
Our activities are targeted towards professional and scientific development for students in Computer Science. They are meant to complement education at the university, and both deepen and broaden our perspective on Computer Science.
In Antwerp, we maintain close ties with WINAK, the student society for Math, CS and Physics students. Regularly, we go out of town to join in activities of related organization in other cities, or to visit conferences or CS related events in the neighbourhood. Though we started at the University of Antwerp, we gladly welcome students from University Colleges in Antwerp.
