Dear ACM Antwerp enthusiasts,

The first session of the year was a huge success! Thank you all for coming!!

A new (academic) year, a new group of enthusiasts

This will probably be my last post as the vice president of the ACM Antwerp Student Chapter: there is a whole new set of people who will run the chapter. This is entirely due to people moving away from the university because of graduation, international exchange programs or pursuing other studies. We really liked organizing everything we did last year and we’d like to thank everyone that attended any of our activities. The TechTalks, the LaTeX course, the Belgian Olympiads in Informatics: everything we organized was a success, more than we could ever hope. Thank you!

The following days the website will get some updates, announcing the new team behind the Antwerp chapter. We (the old team) sat together with the new team today, discussing possible directions and activities for the upcoming year. And the future’s looking bright! Expect to hear the first announcements by next week (we’re aiming for September 26, the start of the academic year) and the presentation of the new team, we’re finalizing the administrative issues at this moment. If you consider contributing in any way, please contact us.

LaTeX course

Due to popular demand we are organizing a LaTeX course. We will cover all basics, starting from scratch. No prior LaTeX knowledge is required but does not pose a problem either. It is really intended as a course for a general audience, especially all students of the Faculty of Sciences are invited. The course will be taught by myself (Pieter Belmans), as all regular TechTalk visitors already know, I am a real TeX afficionado :) .

The lectures (if you wish to use that word, I hope it won’t be too scholarly) will take place every Friday afternoon in March. That is March 4, 11, 18 and 25, from 14h00 to 17h00. Place to be is G.026. As it will be given in Dutch, I’ll quote the official mail:

Dus concreet:
* wanneer: vrijdagen 4, 11, 18, 25 maart, van 2 tot 5 uur
* waar: G.026 op de Middelheimcampus
* mee te brengen: niks, we gebruiken de computers van de universiteit

Belgian Olympiads in Informatics

The International Olympiad in Informatics is the only internationally recognized scientific olympiade where Belgium has a history of absence. Apart from one participation in 1992, it took until 2010 before another Belgian team was sent. The latter was thanks to the efforts of our colleagues of the UCLouvain ACM Student Chapter. With huge effort, they pulled off a very professionally organized competition in 2010 with 250 young participants from all over the French-speaking community of Belgium.

One year later, we’re ready to jump in and launch the same event in the Dutch-speaking community of Belgium. We’re teaming up and found people at all 5 Flemish universities prepared to back us. As a result, we’ll have a national competition this year, accessible to both secondary school students and first-year college and university students. We’re very proud to present the new bilingual website dedicated to the competition: http://www.be-oi.be/.

Registration is now open until February 10, 2011. All 5 Flemish universities will host semifinals. On the website you can browse through last year’s questions, in order to get an idea of what to expect. The best finalists of the 2011 edition, will get the opportunity to defend the Belgian honour at the International Olympiad, this year in Thailand.

For those who are curious about studying computer science or computer engineering, this competition is a great way to get to know what those fields of study are about. If you can program or you want to learn programming, don’t hesitate and try it out – who knows, you might turn out to be a natural and discover a new passion!

Droidcon and FOSDEM

Unfortunately, Droidcon.be is in the middle of the examination period. Their line-up is quite impressive though, and the schedule is worth a peek if you feel like knowing who’s who in the Belgian Android world.

But, after the necessary exams, FOSDEM 2011 is there to unwind. This geekfest of free and open source software draws thousands of visitors from all over the world every year, and is easily Europe’s largest event focused on open source. No-one in the computer science or software world can miss out on this, certainly not since it’s totally free and practically next door.

The next door part is thanks to WINAK, who have successfully applied for some funding at the UAntwerp Math&CS department. As a result, bus transportation will be provided for WINAK members, UAntwerp students and personnel from the Middelheim campus on the 5th of February. Just one thing left to do: register for the bus! For FOSDEM, no registration is needed.
